Resurgent Medvedev Claims First Championship in Over Two Years

Nineteen of the Russian's twenty-one victories have been earned on hard courts

A revitalized Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial trophy for 882 days with a win over opponent Moutet in the tournament championship match.

The athlete, a former top-ranked player, has experienced a difficult year, achieving just a single victory at the major tournaments and suffering a meltdown at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in specific - led to him dropping out of the elite rankings and eventually splitting with long-term mentor Cervara.

Now working with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has steadily progressed in the last few weeks - climaxing in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over Frenchman Moutet.

This represents the player's first championship following the Rome competition and initial on a hardcourt after that period of the previous year.

The win also signifies Medvedev has achieved 21 titles at twenty-one different tournaments.

"For the first time I'm at a competition with my children at once, so to win a championship is especially meaningful," stated world number 14 the champion.

"This championship is in honour of my child her name, because the maiden victory I achieved when my child her name was born was for her."

The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his last six finals, featuring in that event in the past months.

The player's retrieving play style and regular outbursts on court had caused some to question if his capacity to play at the highest level was over.

But the player has made changes in recent weeks, attempting to advance forward and perform positively, supported by an improved serve.

He came back from a disadvantage in the first set against the challenging opponent, winning four of the final five games to go ahead.

The pair swapped break points in the middle set before the Frenchman, striving for his initial ATP Tour championship, took control to force a decider.

The opponent defended four initial break points in a close third set before the champion broke to fifteen to secure the win.

Appropriately, the winner clinched victory with a rally at the net, with his opponent failing to manage a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
