Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
